Divorce and Age

You know what I hear a lot when talking about divorce with potential clients of my Firm?

“What am I going to do with my life? I’m going to be single at X years old.”

You’re single. You’re not dead. Most importantly: Don’t let your marital status define you.

If you are worried about your love life corresponding with age, I have news for you: People can and will get married later in life. People who are divorced get married again. People who are divorced twice get married again. Depending on what state you live in, you could have multiple “starter/learner marriages” before they pull the plug on your attempts. FYI: I learned you can get married as many times as you want to different people in the United States, HOWEVER – be warned that if you live in Kentucky, a wife cannot marry the same man a fourth time.

Me, 35.
My husband, 40.
Paris Hilton, 40.
Cameron Diaz, 42.
Jennifer Lopez, 52.
Barbra Streisand, 56.
Elton John, 66.
George Takei, 71.
My husband’s granny, 80.

Most* people are more grounded later in life. Careers, homes, kids, mid-life crisis has come and gone, and their schedules are more balanced.

Apparently, women reach their sexual peak between their mid-30s and mid-40s. I’ve definitely met a lot of women (and men too) that are still in their prime well past their 40s. 30 is the new 20, 40 is the new 30, and guess what? Age is mostly a state of mind once you’ve hit a point in your life where you start to feel comfortable in your own skin.

It’s never too late to open a new door. It’s never too late to find your better match. It’s never too late to choose happiness.

*Notes a complete generalization that does not apply to all people. The older I get, the more I realize that age and having your shit together DO NOT have any correlation for some folks wandering this earth.
